The Unseen World of Cruise Life
While the passengers of the Oasis of the Seas enjoy eight days of paradise, for the crew, the ship is a permanent home, a nation unto itself, and a lifelong calling.
The true magic of a Royal Caribbean voyage isn’t just in its destinations, but in its people. Behind every served meal and cleaned room is a story of a life chosen, a life at sea.
I met a remarkable Staff Captain (the correct designation for the second-in-command of the vessel)—a woman who has been sailing for 27 years. “I have no life outside the ship,” she told me with a calm certainty. She met her husband, also a crew member, aboard, and the world they’ve built exists within the steel walls of these ships. Their story is not unique; it’s a common thread in this seafaring tapestry.
This lifestyle creates a powerful pull that is hard to break. One male crew member, after 15 years of service, decided to try life on land. He found a job, but the silence after 5 PM was deafening. The lack of constant camaraderie and purpose led to depression, and he soon found himself drawn back to the only life that made sense: life at sea.
For many, the financial freedom is a powerful lure. Nwabisa, a vibrant South African crew member on her third 7-month contract, confessed she initially planned for just one stint. “It’s a life free of bills,” she explained. “You work, you save, you build your future.” She is currently constructing her dream house back home, a goal made achievable by this unique sacrifice. When asked about family, she smiled, “Most of us find our companions here. This is the only life we know.”
This “only life” has forged a unique community. The crew hails from over 70% of the world’s countries, a truly united nation bound not by geography, but by a shared love for the ocean. They proudly call themselves “Citizens of the Ocean.” Their happiness and eagerness to serve are genuine, born from this powerful sense of belonging.
Leaving them after eight days was a surprisingly emotional experience. After being welcomed into their world, I, too, felt the ocean’s call. I had, if only for a short while, become a citizen myself. I am definitely going back sooner than later.
